World Environment Day was created to raise awareness of environmental concerns and enhance political and public action.
It is held every year on June 5th and it is intended to be the most widely celebrated international event for positive environmental action.
The health of the environmental is crucial to our existence and we have the responsibility to make sure that our actions are sustainable and environmentally conscious.
This annual event provides an opportunity to get the conversation started about important environmental issues.
The History of the Holiday
What are the historical origins of World Environment Day?
It was established in 1972 by the General Assembly of the United Nations to coincide with the beginning of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
It has been hosted by a different city every year since and it is always commemorated with an international exposition throughout the week.
This Year’s World Environment Day Celebrations
The theme of the 2012 events is “Green Economy: Does it Include You?”
This year’s festivities will focus on green economic concerns, such as social equity, ecological scarcities, human well-being and the management of resources.
Participants are encouraged to think about whether their country is creating a green economy which reduces pollution and promotes sustainability.
What Can You Do to Celebrate?
This year, to honor World Environmental Day you can do something which helps Mother Nature and makes the world a greener place, such as planting a tree, walking to work instead of driving, or starting a recycling drive.
You can also take the opportunity to learn a new environmentally friendly skill, such as how to install solar panels on your home or how to make your own non-toxic cleaning solution.
You could also attend one of the World Environment Day events in your area. There are many parties, lectures, presentations, activities and family events being held in cities all across the nation.
